Event description: Relaxed Performances: Our relaxed performances are open to all, but created for people with special needs who may find the theatre challenging. This includes people with an Autistic Spectrum Condition, learning disability, or sensory and communication disorder.
We encourage and create an atmosphere where everyone feels safe and able to react to a show as they wish. We sell fewer seats, which means more room for wheelchairs and more space and comfort.
Attendees are welcome to walk in and out of the auditorium as they please and make noise throughout. Certain aspects of staging are also adapted to suit the audience. The script may be simpler, bright lights and loud noises reduced, and house lights raised so the auditorium is not completely dark.
We also have a calm space nearby, with beanbags, sensory toys and bubble lights, for when people need it. All front of house staff are trained in advance of all relaxed performances.
The Twisted Tale of Hansel and Gretel (Relaxed Performances) take place on Friday 14th February at 1 pm and Saturday 15th February at 2 pm.
About the show: A flustered storyteller is joined by a mischievous mocking bird as he follows Hansel and Gretel deep into the forest. All is not what it seems, as the characters start to tell their own version of this peculiar adventure.
Live music, hilarious performance and a mesmerising design ensure that this play will entertain and amuse the entire family.
Co-produced by Birmingham Hippodrome.
Directed by Esther Simpson.
Open Theatre has been working with young performers with learning disabilities for 30 years.
