Shropshire Council update on Covid19

In the week of 28 May to 3 June, 31 confirmed cases were reported – an increase of 34.7% on the previous week. While the number of cases is still below the national and regional averages, and there were no COVID-19-related deaths, the figure has been rising in Shropshire over the last month.

Shropshire’s director of public health, Rachel Robinson, is urging everyone to remember the hands-face-space-fresh air guidance.

Rachel  said “The number of reported cases is increasing and although we are below the national and regional averages, it is something we need to pay attention to given the rise in the Delta variant nationally.

“Coronavirus is still in our communities and we need to do everything we can to stop the spread. The advice that was given at the start of the pandemic is just as important today as it was a year or more ago. Hands-face-space-fresh air is key in preventing the spread.

The vaccine uptake in Shropshire is great and I encourage everyone to book their first and second jabs when invited, but it doesn’t stop you from catching the virus and passing it onto others. That is why regular hand washing, wearing a face covering, keeping a distance of 2m and ensuring indoor areas are well ventilated is still vital along, with regular testing for people with no symptoms”

Dean Carroll, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for public health, said:

” Thank you to all our residents who have stepped up and played their part in the fight against Covid19, but it does not end here. Please ensure you continue to follow all the Government’s advice to ensure Shropshire is a safe place to live, work and shop. It has been a long and difficult 15 months, but now is not the time to forget about the basic safety measures like hands-face-space-fresh air”

It is vitally important not to forget the advice, which was given at the start of the pandemic.

Make Communication Clearer

Shropshire hearing loss charity “Signal” urges shops and public places to help Make Communication Clear

Catriona Nicholls, UK Projects Manager at Signal writes “The reopening of non-essential retail on April 12th marked an exciting moment in the Government roadmap, and the much-anticipated date of May 17th creates even more optimism, both commercially as well as for the general public.

For Signal – a charity based in Shropshire that supports people who are Deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus – the reopening of retail, hospitality and other services comes as an equally welcome relief with many of their face-to-face Shropshire services having been impacted by the restrictions.

However, for many of the people they support, the reopening comes with the anxiety of a significant communication challenge.

Since July 2020, the mandatory use of masks and face coverings – so vital in controlling the spread of Covid-19 – has made communication for anyone who is hard of hearing, a serious challenge. The muffling of speech, combined with the inability to read lips, has had a profound impact on the 1 in 5 people in the county who are deaf or have hearing loss”.

Elizabeth, who has hearing loss, told Signal, “When someone is wearing a mask, the voice is obviously muffled and crucially deprives you of the ability to lipread. Lipreading is invaluable to those of us with hearing loss, and it is surprising how much you lipread without realising it.”

In response to this issue, and thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation for Staffordshire, Signal have launched their “Make Communication Clear” campaign, aimed at raising awareness of the challenges that are being faced by people who rely on lip reading, and recommending simple ways in which shops and services can adapt their communication to provide a more inclusive experience.

Signal are asking businesses, shops, hospitality and other public places to join them in the campaign. They have produced a range of free marketing materials that can be used and displayed, which will let deaf and hard of hearing people know that this is a welcoming, “Deaf Friendly” space, where staff know how to adapt their communication methods to ensure a deaf aware service.

Included in the free pack is a colourful poster that helps staff to understand 8 simple communication tips that will support them to deliver an inclusive customer service.

Click this link to watch a short video (with BSL) about 8 simple communication tips https://youtu.be/zTh_z08_U4M

Signal Communication Tips 2021 A5

Also in the pack is a poster promoting the space as “Deaf Friendly” and explaining that, in accordance with Government Guidelines*, deaf-aware staff will temporarily lower their mask to allow their lips to be read, if required.

Finally, there are a range of colourful badges, with positive messages about lip reading, that can be worn both by staff members and people with hearing loss.

Packs can be ordered for free by visiting Signal’s website page www.signal.org.uk/covid-19

Signal hopes when staff working in customer facing roles have a better understanding of the challenges faced by customers who are deaf or have hearing loss, as well as an understanding of how small adaptations can make communication so much easier, life for the 1 in 5 people who experience hearing loss in our county, will be significantly improved: now and beyond the pandemic.

*Government Guidelines state you do not need to wear a face covering, “if you are speaking to or providing assistance to someone who relies on lip reading, clear sound or facial expressions to communicate”.

Debt advice services in Shropshire survey-Deadline Extended

Shropshire Voluntary and Community Sector Assembly (VCSA), Shropshire Association of Local Council (SALC) and Shropshire Council are working together to better understand the work taking place in Shropshire to provide debt advice and support those people who may have money worries, debt or facing financial hardship.

They hope this survey will help them to shine a light on the work that is already taking place, help identify gaps, and identify support needs and opportunities to develop further partnerships and collaborative working.

The Feedback and Insight team will support with survey analysis, and the aim is that the results will help form a baseline for future research. This survey is open to everyone.

To enable collaboration for the future, they would be interested to know if you would like to attend a money advice forum where they can share the results of the questionnaire and set out future priorities. Shropshire Great Outdoors Annual Public Survey 2020-2021

The Annual Outdoor Recreation User Survey gathers information about how people access the great outdoors in Shropshire. The survey is led by the Shropshire Outdoor Partnerships Service, the part of Shropshire Council that maintains and develops recreational access, conserves and enhances the natural environment and encourages people to improve their wellbeing by being active outdoors. The service maintains and protects public rights of way, country parks, countryside and heritage sites, greenspaces and play areas, and supports the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Partnership.

The survey includes questions about the outdoor facilities and activities you make use of, how you obtain information, any access barriers you may face and how satisfied you are with the services provided. Undertaking the survey each year allows us to understand how things are changing and where future actions should be prioritised.

The survey also provides information to support the delivery of Shropshire’s Great Outdoors Strategy 2018-28The strategy sets out how Shropshire Council and our partners aim to conserve and enhance the natural environment, improve people’s health and wellbeing and support the local tourism economy. It sets out the strategic direction for the management and development of publicly accessible greenspace, rights of way and other outdoor access. The strategy fulfils the statutory requirement of a rights of way improvement plan but broadens the remit to deliver across multiple policy areas and to integrate activity across local authority services and partner organisations. It provides a way of inspiring collective action to improve health, prosperity and happiness by cherishing Shropshire’s great outdoors.

To take part in this short online survey and help to develop and improve the service, and prioritise future activity click this link:  https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/OutdoorPartnershipsAnnualUserSurvey2020-21

Note: The Great Outdoors would like to hear from you even if you don’t use rights of way, parks, play areas or countryside sites, so they can understand what the barriers to participation are. SDN says-this survey is very important to our members ie Access issues, facilities and the barriers many of us face.

If you have any comments about the engagement work undertaken by Outdoor Partnerships, please email: outdoor.recreation@shropshire.gov.uk

This survey closes on Sunday 30th May 2021
