Accessible church services leading up to Christmas, accessible films and pantomimes, and Shropshire Disability Network’s own Christmas meeting – they all feature in this edition of Your Voice.

Find out, too, about the progress of the Safe Places Shropshire scheme, a new caring initiative in North Shropshire, and the next open day at Derwen College, whose vision is ‘a world without barriers for people with special educational needs and disabilities’.

Event description: Shrewsbury Charity Christmas Card Shop opened at St Mary’s Church, Shrewsbury (top of Pride Hill Shrewsbury, opposite the Old Post Office, now Waitrose store)

The shop was officially opened by the Mayor of Shrewsbury on Friday 25th October. It is open on Monday to Saturday 10.15 am to 4 pm.

No fewer than 40 charities take part to raise funds for their charity. The shop is staffed by Volunteers from the charities taking part. This is where you will probably find the largest selection of Christmas Cards in Shropshire, if not the West Midlands. Also available will be Christmas wrapping and diaries.

SDN and Safe Place Shropshire will have their cards available. We appreciate all our volunteers who have agreed to take a morning or afternoon slot. As well as raising funds, this is a great opportunity for the smaller charities to raise awareness of their work.

While browsing you may like to have a Cup of Tea or Cafe in the Church Cafe
The shop closes on Saturday 7th December at 4 pm

Welcome to the Autumn edition of Your Voice!

This edition highlights the valuable work of Shropshire Disability Network (SDN) members – Headway Shropshire, Shropshire ME Group, and the local branch of the National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society (NASS).

Event description: SDN are very pleased to be at the Darwin Centre, Shrewsbury for a bucket collection. We appreciate the Management for allowing us to collect because it not only helps us to meet our charity commitments by raising money but it also means we can raise awareness of our work.

We look forward to meeting many shoppers for a chat. We will have leaflets for you to take.

Volunteers are required to staff the stand with others. If you wish to volunteer but have not helped before, we can link you up with one of our experienced volunteers. Monies raised will be used for the benefit of all our members ie maintaining this website, producing “Your Voice” our regular newsletter, insurance for all our activities, running the Safe Place Shropshire Community initiative, Our meetings as well as necessary costs ir printing, publicity, stationery etc

Event description: Would you please help SDN raise awareness of our work at Oswestry, while having a cash collection for our funds? Your Management Committee really appreciates any help you can give us , We thank the staff at Morrisons Oswestry for enabling this to happen.

Why do we need to raise money for SDN? Unfortunately like all charitable organisations we need finance to operate. We can only operate if we fund-raise as that is our main source of income!

Our shopping list is ongoing but below we give you an idea of why we need to have these collections.

  • Insurance-we have to have insurance to operate, cost £680 per year.
  • SDN Meetings- We have our AGM and Members meeting, cost around £150 each
  • Volunteer Expenses-we re-Imburse volunteers for out of pocket expenses ie car parking, it may not be much but it can mount up and we do not want volunteers to feel they cannot help due to costs.
  • Website-we are continually trying to improve it with upgrades, having a bespoke website means we have costs as well as annual hosting fees, this costs around £700 a year.
  • Stationery-we need paper, envelopes, postage stamps, leaflets printed, updating our information stands means we need laminating pouches, velcro etc badges, labels etc to operate.
  • Equipment-we need banners, stands, USB pens, projector and the list goes on.

On the day we will have a selection of leaflets available and shoppers will have opportunity to talk to us.We need and want to engage with our membership, spread the word about SDN to others who may benefit from knowing about us. We need volunteers to help us throughout the day. so if you feel you can help us, please call 07970 816030 or email secretary@shropshire-disability.net to offer help for an hour or two.

By giving us your time you are helping to finance our group as “time is money”. We always work in 2′s & 3′s so if you want to be with a friend to help please tell us as we appreciate that as well.

Event description: Courtesy of SATH Engagement, we will be back in the foyer of the PRH to raise awareness of our work. We will have leaflets available for you to take away but you also have the opportunity to talk to us & sign up as a member which is FREE!

We have items made by our members on sale at very reasonable prices. We always have a stock of second hand books.

All monies raised will be used to progress our work across the county of Shropshire to help people with a disability access the information they need, provide a website, newsletter & more. Much of our work goes unseen as signposting is often confidential. We are a small charity run by volunteers and doing a huge amount of work.

May be you are a member of SDN but have never been to a meeting, would like to but you’re not sure as you don’t know other members. If so, why not come to PRH to talk to us or volunteer for an hour or so, get to know one or two of us and we can tell you more about our meetings.
