New pick up points set-up for free Covid test kits-Shropshire

Everyone across Shropshire will now be able to pick up free lateral flow Covid-19 home testing kits from sites across the county. 

The new collection points for the lateral flow tests will be available at libraries and leisure centres across the Shropshire from Monday 12th April.

 Pharmacies –Several Shropshire pharmacies also offering in person testing, as well as collection. Several Tests can be booked online using  www.1centralhealth.co.uk/shropshirelft  

The lateral flow kits can provide results in around 30 minutes. 

If you are unable to collect testing kit in person, you canorder them for home delivery.  

Adults over 18 years of age can pick up a maximum of two kits each per visit for their own use. 

Instructions on how to use the tests and record results are included with the kits. 

People with symptoms of COVID-19 should NOT take a rapid test. Instead, please stay at home and book a PCR test onlineor by calling 119.      

Anyone who tests positive with an LFD at home must self-isolate immediately and arrange to have a further PCR test.  To book a test visitgov.uk/get-coronavirus-testor call 119.

A Fabulously Inclusive Festival

The 5th LGBT+ History Festival is now taking place in venues around Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin from 26th January to 5th March.

The festival is entirely volunteer run and offers an exciting programme of events open to all. The idea is to increase knowledge and understanding of LGBT+ lives and have fun!

There is something for everyone: from teenagers who fancy a go at clowning, spoken word enthusiasts in Church Stretton, film buffs in Oswestry, to bird watchers in Shrewsbury. All events are open to LGBT+ people, friends, allies, family and colleagues.

Events include: an afternoon singing workshop with some joyful and rousing LGBT+ anthems; the Head of Special Collections at the University of London talks about a particularly unique book collection which puts Shropshire on the map; award-winning film Directors take part in post-film Q & A sessions; young people celebrate inclusive practice in local schools and Clare Summerskill returns to the county for a celebratory evening of songs and comedy.

This year’s festival has been helped by funding from the National Lottery Community Fund.

New support group for people living with dementia and their family carers

Shropshire Rural Communities Charity (RCC) is expanding its support groups for people living with dementia or memory loss and the family members who care for them.

Shrewsbury Care and Share Group will launch on Friday 8th November at St. Peter’s Church,  Monkmoor Road, Shrewsbury SY2 5BL, The meet ups offer “mutual support”-partners take turns to have a break while their loved ones are safe and happy in the company of the rest of the group.

At present there are four Care and Share groups in Shropshire. They are at Church Stretton, Market Drayton, Albrighton and Ludlow. Members meet every fortnight and take part in activities including memory games, crafts, gentle exercise, reminiscing, listening to speakers and socialisng with each other.

The groups have been set up by Shropshire RCC as a result of receiving a grant from a fund set up by the Government to help tackle loneliness.

Event description: If you are between 65 and 95, you may be at risk of falling. Are you feeling less steady on your feet? Measure your strength, balance and endurance against “normal” for your age, and find out how to stay upright and active.

Our free Functional Fitness MOTs will test your strength and balance, with a variety of tests to measure your exercise performance.

Each test comes with a set of “normal values” for people of different ages, which will show you whether you are “doing well” compared to your peers, or .whether you could benefit from being more active.

Appointments are for 2 1/2 hours/ Book times between 9.00 am and 4.30 pm.

Event description: The Effective Hearing Programme will help you make the most of wearing your hearing aids. Everyone in Shropshire who uses a NHS hearing aid is offered a FREE place on this informal and friendly course.  If you have private aids we ask for a small donation of £5.00.

The workshop covers:

  • how the ear works;
  • demonstrates a variety of useful equipment which as loops and telephones;
  • services available to people with hearing loss;
  • adjusting to your hearing aid;
  • care and maintenance of your hearing aid;
  • tinnitus and coping strategies;
  • communication tips;
  • access to work and
  • useful resources and organisations.

We encourage you to bring along a family member/friend or carer as the course will also be relevant to them. It is advisable to book early as they are very popular.
