SignHealth, the national healthcare charity for deaf people is once again holding their annual sign2sing fundraiser on 5th February. Again they are aiming to break the world record for the most people “signing” while singing a song on the same day.
Singers from across Shropshire are being urged to sign up for this musical world record attempt. Registration for sing2sign closes on January 24th. The songs have been specially written this year by Tom & Pippa Gearing, Sarah Linsey and James Hawkins from Bottle Top Music Productions. They are called “As One” and “Get Up and Sing” “As One” is the official song for older children and adults were “Get Up and Sing” is the official childrens song. You can learn them by visting www.sign2sing.org.uk
Linda Petrons the events and corporate fundraiser at SignHealth said “ We have estimated that so far more than 100,000 people have signed up for sign2sing but we need another 20,000 in order to break our world record of 116, 980 and help raise awareness of British Sign Language (BSL) We’re hoping lots of children and adults from the county of Shropshire will sign up”
This has been a very successful fundraiser for three years now. Schools , groups and individuals can take part. The aim for 2014 as well as making a new world record is to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals to learn some sign language and recognise the importance of including everyone in good communication. Raising awareness of hearing impairment is very important because people with hearing difficulties find it more difficult to access healthcare and health information so they are more likely to suffer ill health. By ensuring the next generation of healthcare professionals are aware of deafness and BSL it breaks down barriers and ensures equal access access for everyone.
