Shropshire MHS was established in 1974 and provides a wide range of quality services across the county for the one in four people and their families, who are affected by mental and emotional distress. We help to bridge the gap between being unwell and full independence for the people who use our service. Some people need support in many areas of their lives, whilst others in just a few. Some people need support for long periods of time and others for only a short while.
Our vision is that everyone has the right to live equally with others and to enjoy a good quality of life. Also, that people who use our service are treated with respect, justice and enjoy equality of access to services.
We help to enable people who use our services to play the fullest possible part in their own communities and their own recovery. We work together in partnership with people to make sure that their right to make choices is preserved. We are also striving to reduce the debilitation, alienation, stigma and social isolation experienced by vulnerable people living in rural areas.
Our core service is our Shrewsbury based daily drop in, which runs seven days a week and offers people the chance to relax in a safe, nurturing environment and enjoy taking part in social activities. In addition, we offer a range of groups in Shrewsbury, including Mindfulness for Wellbeing, Reconnect (wellbeing group), Road to Recovery, Women in Mind and Hearing Voices. Our services also extend beyond Shrewsbury to a number of outreach groups held in Whitchurch, Bridgnorth, Ludlow and Market Drayton. These groups operate on a drop in basis and are run by our excellent team of volunteers.
Shropshire MHS operates with a small team of dedicated staff and large team of exceptional volunteers. We have a board of trustees who meet monthly and hold the charity’s activities to account.
Shropshire MHS’s main objective is to empower anyone experiencing a mental health challenge. We campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding of mental ill-health in Shropshire, making sure that the people in need of support are heard.
Our values and beliefs are reflected in the service we provide, in that we:
- Make sure the service we provide reflects the needs of the local community;
- Respect the dignity and rights of everyone that uses our service;
- Make sure that our services are appropriate, safe and acceptable;
- Create an environment that is welcoming to everyone, with a zero tolerance to any discriminatory behaviour;
- Offer choices and promote independence;
- Raise awareness and educate the public on mental health issues;
- Value the contribution our staff and volunteers make;
- Work in partnership with other relevant agencies;
- Operate within the principles of corporate governance.
