Event description: A local charity, which supports older people in the county, has teamed up with Marks & Spencer in Shrewsbury to host an afternoon tea as part of a nationwide campaign to help tackle loneliness.
Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin are inviting older people to attend the gathering on Wednesday 14th June.
This is just one of thousands of events that will be taking place around the UK as part of The Great Get Together – a neighbourhood celebration inspired by the Jo Cox Foundation to show that we have more in common than that which divides us.
The afternoon tea will include a free refill on a hot drink that has been purchased plus free cake and biscuits. Anyone is welcome to come to the event which will be a good opportunity to socialise with friends and also meet new people from the local area.
Rachel Williams, M&S store manager for Shrewsbury, said: “We are delighted to be taking part in The Great Get Together. Our Café is always a good place for meeting friends in a warm and friendly environment, so what better way to encourage socialising than to host an afternoon tea for older people within our community. We’re really looking forward to seeing some of our regular customers at The Great Get Together, as well as some new ones too.”
Heather Osborne, Chief RachelExecutive of Age UK STW, said: “Sadly, feeling lonely and isolated is all too often something that many older people feel. The Great Get Together is a fantastic idea to celebrate our wonderful neighbourhoods and communities – bringing people together so they can create new links and friendships.”
People are welcome to drop in to the afternoon tea anytime from 3-5pm on the 14 June and they can come on their own or with company. For more information about the event contact Age UK STW on 01743 233123.
