Read Easy UK is a national charity which provides free, confidential one-to-one reading coaching for adults from trained volunteers, through locally-run, affiliated volunteer groups.

Our readers and volunteer reading coaches meet twice a week at approved local venues to work for just half an hour at a time through a structured, phonics-based reading programme, which takes up to two or more years to complete. The confidential one-to-one nature of our service is vital to encouraging people to come forward to ask for our help. Many adults are deeply embarrassed and ashamed by the fact that they are unable to read and, with bad memories of school, would fear a return to a classroom setting, where old feelings of failure could be reawakened. By working instead with one dedicated volunteer coach, a supportive and trusting bond develops between the pair, which helps motivate the reader to complete the course.

Read Easy offers 100% confidential, FREE, volunteer-led one-to-one approach which allows people to learn in privacy, at their own pace, and with the understanding support of their own dedicated reading coach. Usually, a coach and reader would meet twice a week for half an hour in a private space within a public venue. Even in these extraordinary times when covid restrictions limit face to face meetings, some of our coach and reader partnerships have continued to ‘meet’ remotely using a tablet, laptop or phone. We may be able to loan a tablet to a new reader who does not have such a device.

We have trained coaches available in our area which covers the towns of Bishop Castle, Church Stretton, Clun, Craven Arms, Knighton, Ludlow and Pontesbury and everywhere in between. We are now looking for new readers.

As you can imagine, it takes a lot for somebody to ask for help with their reading. We know that it is likely to be a partner, family member, friend, employer or support group who encourages them to get in touch.  If you know directly or indirectly someone who could benefit from help with their reading, contact our local co-ordinator, Amana, who can be reached on 07707 762653 or by email – shropshirehills@readeasy.org.uk
