The beginning of NOFAS UK. Susan Fleisher set up NOFAS UK after adopting her beautiful daughter Addie when she was three years old. At the time of her daughter’s adoption, she was not aware that her birth mother’s drinking would hurt her daughter for the rest of her life. It was only as Addie grew up that the full impact of FAS become apparent. Individuals with FAS can exhibit attention deficits, hyperactivity, immature behaviour and learning difficulties, along with growth deficiencies and a distinct pattern of facial anomalies. About 50% of people with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome have varied levels of delayed development. However, as her daughter grew up, Susan looked around for support and information in the UK only to find that very little existed. Not only is there very little information about the risks of FAS available to the general public, but also there is minimal support for children and families who struggle everyday with it and the wider spectrum of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

She set up NOFAS-UK with the goal of raising awareness, increasing public education and supporting individuals with FASD, their families and carers.

We offer Support by having a Helpline that responds to enquiries from parents, family members, carers and others needing advice or referrals for children with FASD disabilities. The Helpline also receives calls from pregnant women, midwives and medical professionals.

Provide Resources: NOFAS-UK provides resources that help support those with FASD at home and in school. We make these available as widely as possible.

Provides Training: NOFAS-UK provides full day and half-day in-house training sessions to public and private organisations. We also work with a network of people who can provide training if we are not able to do so.

Works with GPs & Midwives: NOFAS-UK works to increase professional understanding about FASD and the risks of alcohol in pregnancy among GPs and midwives via our publications, our online resources and via special projects. Diageo has provided invaluable support for this work over several years.

Provides Organisational Support: We liaise with fostering organisations, schools and prison services and all others who are interested in developing their theoretical and practical knowledge about FASD.
