Motability is a national charity, set up on the initiative of the Government in 1977, to assist disabled people with their mobility needs. They direct and oversee the Motability Scheme which enables disabled people to obtain a car, powered wheelchair or scooter simply by using their government-funded mobility allowances.

The Motability Scheme offers worry-free mobility to disabled people and their families. Recipients of the Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance, or Personal Independent Payment (PIP) at the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility component or War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement or Armed Forces Independent Payment (AFIP) can transfer their allowance for a car, powered wheelchair or scooter.  Carers and parents can drive on behalf of the disabled person, so parents of children (from the age of three) and non-drivers can apply to join. The vehicle must be used by, or for the benefit of, the disabled person.

The most popular choice is the Car Scheme Contract Hire option which offers:

  • A new car every three years (choose from the major manufacturers)
  • Maintenance, servicing and repairs included from accredited dealers across the UK
  • Insurance for two named drivers
  • Breakdown cover
  • Tyre replacements
  • Tax disc sent through the post
  • 60,000 mileage allowance over three years

There are currently more than 4,500 Motability accredited dealerships across the UK and more than 4,000 models to choose from across nearly 40 manufacturers. As a national charity, Motability also raises funds and may be able to provide financial assistance for people who would otherwise be unable to afford the mobility solution they need. Financial assistance may be available towards the cost of larger cars, adaptations, driving lessons or wheelchair accessible vehicles.
