Event title: Macular Week
Venue: Across the county/country
Name: Macular Society
Telephone: 0300 3030 111
Event description: The Macular Society has launched its first ever awareness week in partnership with Vision Express.
As well as raising the awareness of macular conditions, the Society hopes to enlighten people in ways of looking after their eyes, and highlight the importance of research funding which could eventually help to find a cure for macular conditions.
Macular conditions all affect the central part of the retina and cause loss of central vision. Macular disease only affects the macula and is the most common cause of sight loss in industrialised countries. Some other conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion can also damage the macula.
The Macular Society has been supporting people with macular conditions for over 25 years. They offer information and support and fund research to find a cure. Thanks to the generous donations of their members and supporters, their services are free.
Over 600,000 people in the UK have age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and about half are registered as visually impaired.
