This 1937 classic starring Jean Gabin and Eric von Stroeheim is set in PoW camps during the First World War. Directed by Jean Renoir (son of the painter Auguste) it tells of the friendships forged across the military divide, creating a profound humanitarian message. This was the first foreign-language film ever to be Oscar-nominated for Best Picture. It remains an acutely thoughtful masterpiece that easily stands the test of time.
