About us: As well as our online advice and information, we run a free helpline for parents and carers who want to talk through their issues with one of our expert advisers.

We support families with the best possible guidance and information. We bring families together to support each other. And we help families to campaign, volunteer and fund-raise to improve life for themselves and others.

We were founded in the 1970s by families of disabled children, who recognised that even if their child’s conditions were different, they shared a common experience – of being a family with a disabled child. They understood how important it is to support each other.

A lot has changed since then but some things haven’t changed nearly enough. There is a desperate lack of services and support for the 620,000 parents in the UK who care for a disabled child. As a result, families face a huge range of challenges and many feel isolated and alone.  Coping with extra financial costs and practical challenges can put an enormous strain on daily life, with families more likely to face emotional issues, stress and anxiety.

We are here for all families with disabled children – supporting families, bringing families together and helping families take action for others.

Our vision is that families with disabled children feel valued and are strong, confident and able to make the decisions that are right for them.

West Midlands:

In the West Midlands, we carry out our service through our regional office in Birmingham, home-based workers and volunteers. Working at a local and regional level, we have up-to-date information on local services and support for families.

Our West Midlands team offers:

  • Advice, information and support to help families find out what is available locally
  • Workshops, events and opportunities to meet other families with disabled children
  • Regular newsletters and ebulletins with useful information for families
  • Guidance for support groups and forums to help them to reach and involve parents
  • Resources for professionals help them point families to the right local services
  • Workshops for professionals working with families.

We work together with government and voluntary organisations. We also take part in local and regional networks to shape policy and ensure the needs of families with disabled children are represented.

The team covers the whole of the West Midlands area including: Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Herefordshire, Sandwell, Solihull, Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, Warwickshire, Wolverhampton, Walsall and Worcestershire.
