Event description: After the success of the 6-week Kick Cancer pilot programme that took place in May 2018, Shrewsbury Town in the community are launching their new 10 week Kick Cancer programme. They are working in partnership with Lingen Davies Cancer Fund, and have created a multi-sport programme helping those living with or recovering from Cancer in Shropshire.

The sessions will consist of different group multi-sport exercise sessions followed by a social session.

Speaking of the programme, Naomi Atkin, Executive Officer at Lingen Davies, said

“I am really pleased that Lingen Davies Cancer Fund and Shrewsbury Town in the Community are working together on this exciting pilot project.”

“Physical activity can be really beneficial to people during and after their cancer treatment, and this is a great opportunity for people in our community to get back to fitness or try out a new activity to help their recovery.”

“Lingen Davies is the only local charity supporting active treatment and recovery for people affected by cancer in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and Mid Wales; quality of life beyond cancer is a key theme of our £1.25 million 40th Anniversary Appeal, and we’re excited about the contribution that the Kick Cancer programme will make to this.”

Our next Kick Cancer programme will run from Wednesday 25th September – Wednesday 4th December. See below for times and locations.

  • Shrewsbury Kick Cancer – Wednesdays 2 pm – 4 pm at Reech Community Hub
  • Ludlow Kick Cancer – Wednesdays – 12 pm – 2 pm at Ludlow Football Stadium

The Disabled Sailing Association is a Torquay-based sailing charity, run for the disabled, by the disabled.

Our aim is, wherever possible,  to give everybody, no matter what their disability, the opportunity to enjoy the experience of seagoing sailing in a safe and pleasurable environment, and to encourage them to be involved in an activity that many believe they are excluded from.

Our objective is to provide the fun and freedom of sailing at sea on one of our specially modified, modern sailing yachts for all disabled people, their family and carers.

Our trips range from local cruising of about three to four hours around Torbay, up to longer coastal and cross-channel passages, including overnight stays aboard for the more adventurous.

The Disabled Sailing Association (DSA) is an ‘RYA Sailability’ affiliated and approved organisation. We were  established as a charity in 2005 by six disabled people who loved sailing at sea and wished to encourage and provide the opportunity to others with a disability to enjoy sailing.

We are a non-profit making organisation, fully reliant on external funding, donations and voluntary contributions. Today, individual membership stands at over two hundred, excluding the care centres, rehabilitation centres, respite and day centres who use our facilities regularly.

We have been able to provide sailing for all ages from 4 to 104 (!) years and through the whole range of disabilities which include blind, deaf blind, learning difficulties, chronic illness and people who are confined to their wheelchairs.

Both our current boats fully comply with the required RNLI sea safety checks and recommendations and are specially adapted for people with a range of disabilities. Wheelchair access is provided via a specially designed ramp makes them accessible for those who have very limited mobility.

Enjoying the fun and freedom of being at sea, handling the boat and the social company of working together in a small team builds confidence, friendships and social skills. As an outdoor activity it promotes a healthier lifestyle and freedom from the usual four walls.

You can join the DSA either as a Member, Associate Member or Supporter.

Any person with a disability can join and sail as a Member. They are supported on the boats by our crews who are all volunteers and  Associate members. Our Supporters are people interested in the work of the DSA and help out with vital shore-based support.

We work with sports governing bodies and other agencies to ensure that athletes with learning disability are included at all levels, with the appropriate support and training needed.

We implement, manage and lead the eligibility and classification system for athletes with learning disability from across the UK and across a number of sports.

We select, manage and support the GB Team at various Championships, including the Inas Global Games and support the athletes and families to be as prepared for the rigors of international sport. In some sports, we support the National Governing Bodies as they select and manage athletes to Inas World and European Championships.

We are the organisation that implements, manages and leads the eligibility and classification system for athletes from across the UK.

We work to raise the profile of sport for people with learning disability, and raise the profile of the athletes whilst celebrating their successes across the sports. We challenge outdated attitudes to open the way for people with learning disability to have a choice and control in their daily lives. We advocate a cultural change in approach to disability.
