CHALK supports the homeless and people living in poverty in the Oswestry and surrounding areas. CHALK provides vital services to the homeless, people living in poverty and as a general place for the community to turn when they need help. The original ethos remains, kindness and no judgment and will forever be the back bone of CHALK.

Our core work is:

  • Providing free furniture and everything to make a home to those experiencing furniture poverty and crisis.
  • Supporting the homeless, sofa surfers and people living in temporary accommodation in Oswestry and surrounding areas. We have been working with the homeless community of Oswestry and surrounding areas for nearly two years. The project started informally, taking an hour out of the day to take water and sandwiches out to everyone in the middle of summer, to warm blankets and hot drinks in the winter. People started to come to us asking for help. Sometimes for an extra blanket, sometimes in sobs of desperation.
  • Oswestry Christmas Day Open House is a community project which provides a full Christmas dinner, entertainment, gifts and transport to members of the local community on Christmas Day. Our aim is to tackle social isolation and hardship in the festive season, as well as reconnect our community in the true spirit of Christmas.

Every eight hours someone is paralysed by a spinal cord injury.

Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help to people who have been paralysed by Spinal Cord Injury. A spinal injury can happen to anyone at any time, and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire exists because there is currently no cure.

People with Spinal Cord Injury will lose muscle and sensory control and a large majority will become full time wheelchair users for the rest of their lives. Historically, the majority of spinal injuries have been sustained by those aged 21 to 30, with nearly three quarters of newly spinally injured people being male. However, Spinal Cord Injury is increasingly affecting older people now too.

Through its projects and programmes, Aspire offers practical support to the 40,000 people living with a spinal cord injury in the UK. This support allows people with spinal injury to lead fulfilled and independent lives in their homes, with their families, in their workplace and in leisure time.

Our services include:

Aspire Grants assists with the purchase of much needed equipment, giving those with a spinal injury the independence that most of us take for granted.

Aspire Housing provides fully accessible properties for use on a short-term basis while someone is adapting their property or looking for a permanent home to suit their needs.

Aspire Independent Living Advisors work in the Spinal Cord Injury Centres providing advice and guidance to patients.

Aspire’s Assistive Technology facilities ensure that everyone, regardless of the level of their spinal cord injury, has independent access to a computer.

Welfare Benefits Advice Service provides appropriate advice and support.

Aspire campaigns to make changes that will benefit every one of the 40,000 people living with a spinal cord injury in the UK.

In November 2018 Anchor Trust and Hanover Housing Association merged to form Anchor Hanover

Hanover and Anchor share proud histories, similar values and bold ambitions. Now, as Anchor Hanover, we’ll build on our achievements to do more, at a bigger scale, than we could before. As one organisation, we’ll transform housing and care so more people have a home where they love living.

Our customers are at the heart of everything we do. So before coming together, we consulted with them and used their views to guide our merger. You can find out more about how we achieved this on either the Hanover or Anchor website.

Together we’ll be a bigger, stronger and more resilient organisation, able to invest in new services and innovate to meet future needs. We’ll negotiate better contracts with suppliers and pool resources and expertise. Plus, this empowers us to give our customers greater value for money.

Our customers now have a bigger range of housing and care options – while our colleagues have wider career choices. We know that quality services start with quality people so we work hard to be recognised as a leading employer to retain and attract the best in our industry.

Coming together gives us greater influence in the communities we serve, influencing care and support locally and working with local authorities, health providers and the voluntary sector. Our experience opens doors, enabling us to be leading partners in Health and Wellbeing Boards and the NHS.

We’ll also shape national policy and debates about ageing. Our combined expertise allows us to influence national policies for people in later life. Together, we’ll build on our reputations as strong and respected players with politicians, policy makers and the public. We’ll lobby for the best policies for people in later life and work together with key organisations to secure them. Plus, we’ll always ensure that the voices of older people are at the heart of the debate.

As a bigger organisation we can access more investment to build more properties for people in later life than before. Our ambitious development plans include social rented, shared ownership and homes for sale. We’ll also continue to be a major provider of residential care.

As England’s largest provider of specialist housing and care for people in later life, we’re committed to creating choice and opportunity for everyone.

Our merger means we now provide 54,000 homes for people in later life across almost 1,700 sites and operate in more than 90% of local councils in England

We offer an impressive range of services:

  • affordable rented properties
  • extra care housing
  • spacious leasehold apartments
  • accessible bungalows
  • downsizer homes
  • luxury retirement villages

…and more than 100 residential care homes offering everything from respite stays to specialist dementia care.

We support over 800 people a year – of all ages and injury levels – to lead the life they want. We are there at every stage, and we are there for families and loved ones too.

Our outreach team deliver vital wheelchair skills training in hospitals and spinal centres, and contact people once they return home, offering an understanding ear and practical advice. Our residential courses help people with a spinal cord injury build confidence, give them a supportive network and opportunities to learn life skills that allow them to be as independent as possible. Our Back Up to Work course and education inclusion service support people as they find their way back to work and education. Our mentoring service matches people with a spinal cord injury and their family members with someone who has been through the same situation.
