Derwen College welcomed the first students to its new satellite provision in Telford in September 2020. The launch of the Telford site comes in response to a need for more options for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in the local authority. Students working at the site will receive expert vocational training and independence skills learning.

Derwen College has converted the former business premises at Stafford Park into a new satellite site. From here, a team of expert staff will offer day students with SEND the specialist learning and work placement provision that they would expect from a college with an outstanding reputation.

As a learner at our Telford site you will work within small groups in a friendly, productive environment. Once you gain confidence and your skills progress, you will have the opportunity to work within the local community.

Veterans  with Dogs was founded with the specific intention of training fully accredited assistance dogs to help mitigate the symptoms of mental health difficulties for our veterans and active-duty service members.

We saw the real need to establish a programme of training as there were no other organisations in the UK providing dogs specifically for mental health disabilities. The task was a huge undertaking, but seeing how veterans and their families suffer is a heart-breaking experience and only strengthened our resolve to do ‘something’ to help.

More veterans are dying from suicides as a result of the impact of the psychological and emotional trauma than have been killed in conflict. The divorce rate, number who are now in prison or homeless, and the impact these issues are having on their children of our veterans are shocking. Many have severed relationships, are afraid to leave their homes, get little sleep due to recurring nightmares, and are emotionally numb.

Disabled Police Association

Website: http://www.disabledpolice.info/
Telephone: N/A
Address: N/A

The Disabled Police Association was founded in July 2012 in response to a need for a coordinated response to national policing matters affecting disabled officers and staff within the police services of the United Kingdom.

The DPA is run by an Executive Committee made up of serving officers and police staff, drawn from all ranks and grades from police forces across the UK. National representatives meet regularly to discuss employment issues within the police service relating to disability, injury and illness. Support for individual officers and staff is provided by Force disability support networks.

Our Association holds no financial budget, and we receive no government funding.

(If you need assistance with autism, Asperger syndrome, dyslexia, ADHD or other neurodiverse conditions, our sister group the National Police Autism Association also offers personal advice and support.)

Disabled Access Day

c/o Euan’s Guide,CodeBase,38 Castle Terrace,Edinburgh, EH3 9DZ

In 2015 Disabled Access Day began as a day to celebrate good access and to create opportunities for people to try something new. The day was very much about highlighting the fantastic access that already exists in places, experiences such as going on a touch tour, enjoying a relaxed peformance, sensory experiences, signed events, level access and of course a warm welcome!

The Day was founded against the backdrop of wanting to make it easy for disabled people to try something new. Often these activities and experiences are hard to arrange or create a sense of anxiety and fear.

Our founder, Paul’s experience of wanting to try getting on a bus with his powerchair but not in the rush hour of a weekday service was the catalyst. He describes it as a day for focusing on creating opportunities for people to attend a series of organised events where they will receive a warm welcome, a chance to try something new and the memory of having done something different. He wants 2019’s events and experiences to have a legacy. Just like his telling the story of trying a bus for the first time.

Disabled People are encouraged having tried something new, or visited somewhere new, to share their story so that others can follow. A review on Euan’s Guide, a tweet on social media or a blog post all help to make it easier for others considering a similar visit or experience.
