A volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are.

Our work in the UK focuses on four areas:

  • emergency response – we help individuals and communities respond to and recover from emergencies, such as floods, fires and evacuations
  • first aid training – we promote life-saving and other humanitarian skills so individuals can be ready to help their own communities

The Red cross particularly want to develop the training of:

  • carers
  • people with special needs
  • communities affected by rural isolation
  • parents
  • homeless people
  • communities affected by high rates of heart disease.

Health and social care – help people during difficult periods of their life, such as an illness, breakdown in support arrangements or bereavement

Can provide short-term care and support in the home for people after an accident or illness, giving them the confidence to continue their daily lives. This service can be provided following a stay in hospital or to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions.

Can provide short-term loans of medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, for people with a disability or illness.

Teach people with disfiguring skin conditions and scars how to use prescribable cover creams, helping them regain confidence and independence. The service is open to men, women and children through a medical referral from a consultant and clinics are held once a month at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Provide door-to-door transport for people who cannot get about easily, restoring their freedom and independence.

Young Carers Service: The aim of the project is to give young carers an opportunity to take a break from their responsibilities at home and have some time out to enjoy a variety of activities such as arts, crafts, music, sports activities and trips. Young carers also have access to advice and support. The young carers project is organised into five areas; Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Oswestry, Market Drayton and Shrewsbury which meet every month in a variety of settings.  For details or a confidential chat, call the Young Carers Co-ordinator, on 01743 280070.

Refugees and other vulnerable migrants – we help new arrivals to the UK and work to reunite families separated by conflicts and disasters.
