New Mobile (fully accessible) Library van joins Shropshire Fleet

Shropshire Libraries has welcomed a new mobile library to the fleet bringing the total in service to 3.

The Sabrina mobile library went into service earlier this month and replaces a vehicle whose lease had expired. It will visit areas around central Shropshire.

The new mobile is very light and airy and has a custom-built lift making it fully accessible. It carries the usual range of adult and junior books, talking books and also gives access to all stock in Shropshire Libraries via the e-library online catalogue.

Mobile libraries cover 280 stops across Shropshire as they bring libraries to communities and residents in the county.

If you live, work or study in Shropshire you can become a member of Shropshire Libraries – it’s free. Click here to join now and have immediate access to thousands of titles in your local library and online.

You can find more information about all stops and timings for mobile libraries across Shropshire by visiting the Shropshire Libraries website.

SaTH screening timeline goes national

A group of staff at the Trust that runs Shropshire’s two acute hospitals has overhauled an NHS Screening Timeline for their patients, and now the resource has been rolled out nationally by Public Health England.

Managers for six screening programmes at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH), which runs The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, put their heads together after realising information about screening for patients in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin needed to improve. With the help of SaTH’s Graphic Designer, Sam Parker, they devised a timeline that runs from conception up to age of 70 and illustrates the screening services that are available to people throughout their lives – improving awareness and access for the local community.

Public Health England Screening was so impressed with the timeline that it adapted it into a double-sided resource and have made it available nationally so that others can benefit.

“We are fortunate in this country that we have opportunity to take up various screenings at no cost to us” said Ruby, our Chair. She continued continued, “if you are invited for any type of screening, take it up, or if you think you should have been invited and have not received an invitation, then ask the question of your GP, as it could save your life “.

The screening chart below, shows at what time in our lives, we should be invited/or go for screenings.

Do you have experience of End of Life Care?

Healthwatch Telford & Wrekin would like to know if you have experience of “End of Life Care or Palliative Care services?”

If so, they would like to hear your views. For example, did you feel that the care your loved one received was what they wanted and expected? Were they treated with dignity and did they feel listened to and their wishes respected?

The more comments received the more influence Healthwatch Telford & Wrekin has to improve services for local people.”

Telephone: 01952 739540 or email: telford.admin@healthwatchtelfordandwrekin.co.uk if you have information to share.

Death and dying can be a very difficult topic to talk about. Whether the person is in hospital or being supported to die at home, there is only one chance for the providers of care to get it right.

Healthwatch Shropshire is asking if people would be willing to share their experiences of End of Life Care in the county.  For example, did you feel that the care your loved one received was what they wanted and expected? Were they treated with dignity and did they feel listened to and their wishes respected?

A recent Press Release from Healthwatch Shropshire states:

” It is really important that those providing the care are open and honest with both the patient and relatives.  Being better informed can reduce stress and anxiety and help people understand what to expect. Healthwatch Shropshire would like to know whether the language used by those giving the care was appropriate and did it prepare people for what was to happen? Were other ways of communicating found if the person’s preferences couldn’t be expressed verbally, either because of dementia or brain injury, for example?

Lynn Cawley, Chief Officer of Healthwatch Shropshire, said: “We are keen to build up a picture of how well End of Life Care is working across Shropshire and whether people feel that they received the right support for them.”

“We want to find out whether care for the dying is equitable across the county and if there is a joined up approach between different services to End of Life Care including out of hours services”.

People can let Healthwatch Shropshire know about their experiences by telephone 01743 237884, by email enquiries@healthwatchshropshire.co.uk or online www.healthwatchshropshire.co.uk. The more comments received the more influence Healthwatch Shropshire has to improve services for local people.”

Note: Healthwatch Shropshire is the independent consumer champion for health and social care in Shropshire. It gathers the views and experiences of patients, service users, carers, and the general public about services including hospitals, GPs, mental health services, community health services, pharmacists, opticians, residential care and children’s services.  It also has statutory powers that it can use to influence service provision by encouraging improvements.

Event description: Join us for our Festival of Ageing and try something new ie Walking Football, Yoga, SInging, being Creative.
We will have information stalls and more.

This is an open and free event for the public, the voluntary and community sector, businesses and health and care services across the county.

A range of organisations from across Shropshire have come together to create a day to celebrate older people (but all ages are welcome), to provide information from inspirational and internationally renowned speakers about the science of ageing, and the latest thinking on what keeps us well. There will also be taster sessions of local activities for participants to try – locally available activities that we know are good for our wellbeing.

An aspiration of the day is that people feel they have been able to take part in something that interests them, from art and singing to walking football and yoga (see below for full schedule of activities). We also hope that the day increases recognition of the valuable role older people play in our communities, as well as an improved understanding about what keeps us well as we age.

There will be a ‘marketplace’ of voluntary and community sector opportunities, public services, and local community activities. People will be able to browse the market place to learn how to get involved, from partaking in local activities to volunteering and connecting with people near to home. At the marketplace, people will also be able to ask questions and learn about how health and care service are changing, and input thoughts and ideas. What can be expected from the day?
