Widely regarded as a comedy in 1960, Jack Lemmon plays C.C.Baxter, a go-getting office worker who loans his tiny apartment to his philandering superiors for their romantic trysts. He runs into trouble when he finds himself sharing a girlfriend (Shirley MacLaine) with his callous boss (Fred MacMurray).

Director Billy Wilder’s customary cynicism is leavened here by tender humor, romance, and genuine pathos.

The Apartment won 6 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.

The film starts at 2 pm and costs £5 entry (Carers go FREE).

Victim Advice Line (VAL) launched by West Mercia Police

As part of Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion’s commitment to ensuring victims of crime receive an improved and more consistent service, a new support function in the form of the Victim Advice Line will be launched in West Mercia on Monday 1st April 2019.

Wanting to know if victims of crime felt fully supported, Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion carried out a consultation with a number of people who gave a clear mandate for wanting things to be done differently.

The victims stated they wanted a single point of entry into support, they wanted quick updates on their case, and they also wanted to have greater ownership of their journey and help shape it themselves – as opposed to being labelled by a type of crime and having a ‘one size fits all’ support package.

The outcomes from the consultation have shaped all that the Victim Advice Line (VAL) is aiming to deliver. VAL (Victim Advice Line) will be replacing the initial needs assessment function that has previously been provided by Victim Support and will remove many layers within the victim’s journey, meaning they will have a clearer pathway of support and they won’t need to repeat their story multiple times.

The Victim Advice Line will be made up of a team of expert and fully trained Victim Care Coordinators who will help the victim when they come through to the service, be it through police, third party or self-referral (the crime doesn’t have to have been reported to the police). The victim may then be referred onto other specialist services, dependent on the level of support they may need.

This type of model is being seen as best practice and a flagship across the country in delivering support to victims, having already been adopted by other PCCs and police forces.

Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said: “Whilst the contract we had with Victim Support was good, in order to provide victims with what they wanted we needed to make some fundamental changes.

“The Victim Advice Line will look at an individual and make sure they’re getting the level of support they need. They won’t be given a pre-determined package, they’ll be given support that is completely tailored to them. By doing this we hope to give victims greater confidence and satisfaction that will help in moving forward with their life.”

“The service will also allow better multi-agency working, such as with the police and other support services, which will ensure victims are supported throughout the entire criminal justice system from the very beginning of their journey through to the end.”

Assistant Chief Constable Martin Evans said: “I have been working closely with the PCC’s office for a number of months and I am delighted to see that the new Victim Advice Line will be going live on 1st April. West Mercia strives to put victims at the heart of what we do and the support that the Victim Advice Line will provide alongside us will be invaluable.

“The majority of staff that will be working within the Victim Advice Line already have a great deal of experience in supporting victims of crime and their enthusiasm and determination to provide the best service possible is very clear to see.”

Accessing a Smear Test (Cervical Screening) with a Physical Disability

Jo’s cervical cancer trust (https://www.jostrust.org.uk) have launched a campaign called Smear for Smear . They want to know about your experiences in accessing cervical screening (smear test), as well as what provisions are available to you to enable you to access screening.

More than one in four women don’t take up their cervical screening invitation with attendance at an all-time low. For women with a physical disability there can be additional barriers and inequalities to accessing the test. ie Is your GP surgery accessible? Do they have a hoist?

Sharing your experiences with Jo’s Trust will help them form a report that aims to raise awareness of the issue.

To take part in the survey, click here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/LTKZ6LZ (Your answers will be confidential and will not identify you.

This survey should only take 5 minutes of your time and if you have any questions please contact media@jostrust.org.uk

Bladder and Bowel Community

Telephone: 01926 357220

Address: Bladder and Bowel Community, 7 The Court, Holywell Business Park, Northfield Road, Southam CV47 0FS

Our aim is to break the taboo of living life with a bladder or bowel dysfunction, diversion or condition, raise awareness and most importantly, help people.

With a staggering 14 million people a year in the UK suffering from bladder and bowel conditions at any one time, our support network has become a vital lifeline to many, supporting them in achieving their goals and aspirations.

Whether you’re looking for information about a particular condition, the treatment options available, or just simply want to chat with others who have shared a similar experience to you then you can do so here.

The Bladder and Bowel Community (B&BC) is the UK wide service for people with bladder and bowel control problems.  B&BC provides information and support services, including a confidential helpline, for anyone affected by these conditions as well as their families, carers and healthcare professionals.

B&BC was officially formed in June 2008 and incorporates the objectives and missions of Incontact (National Action on Incontinence formed in 1989) and the Continence Foundation, which closed in May 2008.

With an estimated 14 million people in the UK with a bladder control problem and 6.5 million with a bowel control problem that is bothersome, our work is vital if we are to change the way in which patients are helped and supported.

Our Vision and Aims

Our mission is to inspire change and create opportunities to enable people with bladder and bowel control problems to have a voice and equal choice.

  • We aim to:- Raise awareness of bladder and bowel control problems amongst the general public and healthcare professionals.
  • Give access to information and support regarding the treatments, products and services for people with these conditions.

Ultimately we will work towards making a real difference to the lives of those affected by bladder and bowel control problems and deliver the kind of services that will meet the needs of those people affected by these issues

We believe in listening to the needs of people affected by bladder and bowel problems and provides advice and support to patients by means of the helpline, supported by specialist continence nurses and continence physiotherapists.

B&BC works in partnership with professional organisations in the field to ensure that everyone who needs help and support gets free access to all the services that are available. We also provides information and support regarding treatments, products and clinical services so that people with these conditions are then able to make an educated and informed choice about their care.

B&BC works with researchers to improve treatments and design innovative products for bladder and bowel disorders. We speak on behalf of those affected and those close to them in order to influence policy makers and service providers in both the private and public sectors.

B&BC also works closely with healthcare professionals, providing information and support materials for patients to improve standards of management and care. We believe all patients should get effective modern help, which will enable them to enjoy a greater quality of life.

Axis Counselling

Website: http://www.axiscounselling.org.uk/

Telephone: Shrewsbury 01743 357777 Telford 01952 278000

Address: Shrewsury- Axis Counselling, Fletcher House, 15 College Hill, Shrewsbury SY1 1LY

Address: Telford –Axis Counselling, The Glebe Centre, Glebe Street, Wellington, Telford TF1 1JP

Axis has been counselling survivors of childhood sexual abuse and sexual trauma for more than 20 years.  We are one of the most experienced and long-established services in the UK and have helped more than 12,000 people over the years.

All our counsellors are specially trained to understand and help you overcome the trauma you have suffered.  Your counsellor will listen to and believe you, and help you explore issues which you have previously ignored or buried subconsciously.  They will help you to set out a new path for yourself and begin to build a new future.

We have a choice of male or female counsellors and we take great care in making sure that you feel comfortable with them so you are able to tell your story and move on with your life. If you feel unable to build a relationship with your counsellor for whatever reason (sometimes it may be something as simple as they may have a physical resemblance which reminds you of your abuser, or you know you respond better to a particular type of approach) we are happy to offer you another counsellor.

All our counsellors are members of the BACP – British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and have undergone specialist in-house training which draws on the wealth of experience Axis has gained over the last 20 years .

We aim to provide a comprehensive, confidential, flexible and high quality counselling service to those in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin who have suffered childhood sexual, physical or emotional abuse, rape or sexual violence.

We want to help you overcome the effects of your past trauma, and understand how this has affected you emotionally, leading to the thoughts, feelings and actions you have today. We will help you shift your focus from being a victim to being a survivor who now takes control of your life.

We aim to provide practical support too, if requested, through our ISVA service with advice, advocacy, criminal justice guidance, and practical assistance to victims of sexual assault and violation.

Our approach to counselling is tailored to the individual – letting the client have control, set goals and work at his/her own pace.
