Why not take this opportunity?

Last December, SDN invited you to take part in our competition to design our Christmas Cards for 2018. The weather this week is providing you with another opportunity to snap that scene, or paint that picture using watercolours, acrylics or oils or to do a pencil drawing. May be, you would prefer something different to a local scene. If you think a more traditional card is better or have a different idea to offer, please have a go. This is your chance to use your skills.

There are a few rules and notes:

  • To take part, you must be a registered member of Shropshire Disability Network.
  • Entries accepted must be your own work:   photographs/water colour/oil/acrylics/pencil.
  • No 3D designs.
  • Submissions from Organisations and Professionals will not be accepted.
  • You agree that if your entry is a winning design, it becomes our property to be used solely by SDN for creating our charity Christmas cards, which will be sold to support the charity.
  • We have appointed judges from local organisations.

Have you ever thought, I would like my art to be in an exhibition? SDN Management Committee will consider holding an exhibition of all entries submitted because we know, many of our members have artistic talents

You can submit more than one entry! For an application form please call or text:

SDN Mobile 07780 852 229 or email admin@shropshire-disability.net or

SDN Secretary mobile 07398 350 255  or email secretary@shropshire-disability.net

The form will give you details of where to send your entry. Closing date will be 30th April 2018.

Sales of SDN cards not only help with funding but by supporting us, you will also be helping to spread awareness of our work. While last year we raised more money at the Shrewsbury Charity Christmas Card shop, overall sales were slightly down. The bad weather early December when many events were cancelled probably impacted, however we hope by giving you this opportunity to design a card, it will help you and us.

‘Could It Be Cancer?’ Talks

Lingen Davies Cancer Fund is offering ‘Could it be Cancer?’ talks to groups in our community, to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of the most common cancers, and encouraging people to take part in screening programmes- they really can be a lifesaver!

Lingen Davies exists to make a positive difference to lives affected by cancer in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and Mid Wales. This includes helping people recognise symptoms and seek treatment early, when it is more likely to be effective.

The talks are delivered by Dr Bruce Eden, a trustee of Lingen Davies and retired GP. Bruce has a wealth of experience in supporting people with cancer. He was Clinical Chair of Shropshire Primary Care Trust 2001-2006, and Primary Care Lead for the Greater Midlands Cancer Network 2009-2013. Bruce has been a trustee of the charity since 2009.

He is currently focusing on the most commonly occurring cancers- Breast, Bowel, Prostate and Lung. However, talks can be modified to meet the needs of your group, or to focus more specifically on a type of cancer. The sessions are informal and accessible to everyone. There is no charge for our talks, but all donations to the charity are gratefully received.

If you would like to arrange for Bruce to visit your group, please contact Naomi Atkin, Lingen Davies Executive Officer, on naomi.atkin@sath.nhs.uk. To find out more about Lingen Davies Cancer Fund visit their website

On Thursday 08th February, the UK Government launched its much awaited consultation on the use of section 19 and 22 permits. This sets out how it intends to change its guidance following its reinterpretation of how the EU regulations (1071/2009) on passenger service vehicle (PSV) operators should be applied in England, Wales and Scotland.

You can access the consultation here:  https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/section-19-and-22-permits-how-to-apply-eu-regulation-10712009

Mobility Matters will be taking the following steps on behalf of the Voluntary sector, as they did with their response to the Transport Select Committee:

  • launching an online questionnaire that will gather much needed information that will be shared with the Department as part of this consultation;
  •  issuing advice and guidance on how best to respond;
  • keeping organisations posted on regional events planned by the Department as part of their consultation;
  • working constructively with the Department to map out a future that supports the most vulnerable members of our communities.
