World Autism Awareness Week 27th March to 2nd April 2017

What is Autism?

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how people perceive the world and interact with others.

Autistic people see, hear and feel the world differently to other people. If you are autistic, you are autistic for life; autism is not an illness or disease and cannot be ‘cured‘. Often people feel being autistic is a fundamental aspect of their identity.

Autism is a spectrum condition. All autistic people share certain difficulties, but being autistic will affect them in different ways. Some autistic people also have learning disabilitiesmental health issues or other conditions, meaning people need different levels of support. All people on the autism spectrum learn and develop. With the right sort of support, all can be helped to live a more fulfilling life of their own choosing.

Sometimes autistic people get sensory overload.  This means that they find noises and lights too much to live with.  They may also dislike being touched by others.

How common is autism?

Autism is much more common than most people think. There are around 700,000 people in the UK living with autism – that’s more than 1 in 100. People from all nationalities and cultural, religious and social backgrounds can be autistic, although it appears to affect more men than women.

Tips for interacting with a person with autism

West Mercia Police worked with people living with the condition to create the information card shown here.

Dementia Awareness Week 14-20 May 2017

Start Date:
14th May 2017

End Date:
20th May 2017

Start Time:
00.01

End Time:

Event title: Dementia Awareness Week 14-20 May 2017
Venue: Various across UK
Name: Alzheimer’s Society
Email: enquiries@alzheimers.org.uk
Telephone: 0330 333 0804
Event description This Dementia Awareness Week (14-20 May), Alzheimer’s Society wants everyone across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to take action and unite against dementia. Dementia will affect us all, with someone developing it every three minutes, and so many people are facing it alone.

Alzheimer’s Society in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin is running a United Against Dementia day on 20 May. Together with local communities in Church Aston and Muxton we are putting on a day of events, connecting them together with a journey between the two.
In the morning there will be a Vintage tea at Church Aston parish church, with opportunities to reminisce through games, music, and interactive exhibitions, as well as find out more about local opportunities through stands.
Later in the afternoon Muxton Parish Church are running a Dementia Friendly Film showing of “Singin’ in the rain”. Again there will be opportunities for people to find out more about local activities through stands.
Between the two events we are encouraging people to unite and join us on a journey between the events: There will be a walk where people can make a public display that people want to unite against dementia, as well as opportunities for people to use the handy bus route to show their support.
Right now we want you to know about the plans, see and display the attached poster for the event, and let us know if there are ways you would like to be involved.

Bereaved Families urged to settle affairs.

Local Solicitors Wace Morgan have issued a press release urging families to act quickly to settle the financial affairs of a deceased relative to avoid planned hikes in administration costs. The government have announced new probate fees & these will probably come into force in May 2017.

At present there is no fee for applying for a grant of representation giving you the legal right to administer a deceased person’s estate, if the estate is worth less than £5000. If you apply for the grant, a court fee of £215 applies, if you do this via a solicitor then the fee is £155 for estates over £5000. It is all change in May as the applicable court fees will be in bands & will be calculated on the value of the deceased’s estate. The proposed new fees mean that an estate worth between £50,000 and £300,000 would pay £300, an estate worth between £300,000 and £500,000 would pay £1,000 and an estate worth between £500,000 and £1,000,000 would pay £4,000.  The fees above that rise to a maximum of £20,000 for an estate worth more than £2,000,000.

The planned increases will benefit some families but there will be few estates valued under £50,000 which will no longer have to pay a fee but there are problems looming for others. Very often money is tied up in assets and these fees are payable in addition to any inheritance tax due and must be paid before the grant of representation is issued.

Emma Jacobs from Wace Morgan said recently “ Bereaved families should act quickly and look to apply for the grant of representation as soon as possible to avoid paying the increased fees.”

SDN says ” Bereavement is a difficult time for everyone. A time when there is so much that needs to be done under emotional & difficult circumstances. This could impact on people especially when funds are tied up in assets but the fees have to be paid up first. Please seek advice from a reputable organisation, if you should be unfortunate enough to be in this situation”
