Event title: Bricks at the Flicks for Autistic Kids.

Event description: The Old Market Hall, Shrewsbury, has a very special screening of the Lego Movie. To celebrate Autism Awareness day, the venue will be holding a special Autism friendly screening of the hilarious kids’ movie today.

It is believed that around 1 in 100 in the United Kingdom people are living with Autism. This month sees a variety of events happening nationwide to raise awareness for the illness and April 2nd is National Autism Awareness Day.

Autism friendly screenings and performances have become increasingly popular among entertainment establishments and audiences alike. Offering a relaxed environment, the lighting is dimmed not dark, and the sound is played at a slightly reduced level than a regular screening. Autism friendly screenings offer anyone with autism the opportunity and freedom to enjoy a film without the anxiety or stress of disturbing other people in the audience.

Saturday 5th’s Autism friendly screening is a first for the Old Market Hall. It is hoped that if the event is successful many more will follow. Robert Johnson programming manager for the venue said ‘We are really pleased to be a part of the Autism Awareness campaign. As a venue we already offer subtitled screenings for the hard of hearing, and screenings for mothers and babies, so to be able to reach out to another part of the community is wonderful.’

He continued ‘If anyone knows anyone who might be interested in this unique screening please let them know. As well as the adjustments to light and sound we are offering unreserved seating. Families can sit where they feel most comfortable and happiest; we are also allowing families to bring in their own snacks and drinks. It is about making our Autistic visitors feel safe and relaxed and allowing them to enjoy a movie in a way most of us take for granted.’

Tickets for The Lego Movie are available direct from the Old Market Hall, on the venues website www.oldmarkethall.co.uk or by contacting the Box Office on (01743) 281 281.
