Members of Shrewsbury Deaf Club were full of praise for Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn at the December open meeting of Shropshire Disability Network.  Through their BSL interpreter, they told me what a pleasure it was to attend signed performances at the town’s riverside Theatre.

One of the Deaf Club members told me “going to Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn is brilliant, we are always treated as equals by them and we love that”.

All members of the Deaf Club were full of nothing but praise for the local attraction and would recommend that any hearing impaired people in and around the County Town check out one of the BSL interpreted performances soon.

Theatre Severn is committed to increasing the number of Sign Language Interpreted performances by working with companies who include SLI as an integral part of their productions. The theatre said “We always promote an SLI performance within our pantomime season. See our brochure for further details or enquire at the Box Office when booking your tickets”

.   The theatre went on to add:

We are now offering some captioned performances for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing patrons, delivered by STAGETEXT. Captions are similar to TV subtitles; the actors’ words appear on an LED display unit, placed near the stage or in the set, at the same time as they are spoken or sung. Character names, sound effects and offstage noises are also given.

Theatre Severn’s pantomime is now in full swing and they have included two special performances for the hearing impaired community:

Saturday 17th December at 6.30. – BSL Sign Language Interpreted performance.

Friday 6th January at 5.30. – STAGETEXT performance (see info above).

Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn has excellent disabled facilities throughout.

Update on Shropshire Pilot People2People and how you might benefit – tell us what you think

SDN broke the news, literally, about the Shropshire Pilot in April this year, and set out its hopes for the way this might benefit those who wanted to take control of their care  (here) and be at the centre of the decision making process about the care they receive.  The scheme is all about social workers working in a very different way to support individuals in the community and, if it is to achieve its target,  is a big step away from a very traditional and ingrained approach to assessing care needs.  It will require a significant change in culture for social workers who will need to move to doing “with” and away from doing “for” and “to”.  It will need people who are able to support clients nervous about taking back control and encourage them to do so in a way that improves their quality of life.

SDN member Ruby Hartshorn tells us a little more about what it is and how it should work.  Why not have a look at what she says, and follow the link back to the original aspirations set out last April.  Then tell us what you think.   There is also information on Shropshire Council’s website here  There is also an interesting video (in which our Ruby features) about People2People and its aspirations here

  • Is it on target?
  •  Is it looking as if it is goingto do what it set out to do?
  • Should anything be done differently to make this exciting pilot a big success  for those who use care services?  Click here for more information and to read Ruby’s report

SDN Member encourages Council to review their paperwork for Personal Budget Holders

Good news for those holdingPersonal Budgets who have been telling SDN that they have struggled to make sense of the paperwork provided by Shropshire Council.  Senior staff and Councillors with responsibility for Adult Social Care took on board the comments made at the September meeting reviewing the Live Life Your Way consultation.  They invited Ruby Hartshorn, who has a personal budget herself and has contact with many people in the same situation, to meet with them and see first hand what the problems are and discuss ways to resolve them.  The crux of the matter is an outdated software system which the Council have to struggle to make as user friendly as possible.  In the short term the meeting has offered some simple fixes to make information more understandable and SDN is grateful to Ruby for all the work she has done to represent the concerns being expressed by many members.  Read the full details here, and see solutions suggested.
